INTRODUCTION

Mark Chapter 13 corresponds with Matthew 24 and Luke 21:5‐end. This chapter (i.e. Mark 13) depicts in clear terms the signs that will precede the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It seeks to prepare our mind for the troubles and misfortunes that will occur at the end of time.

WHAT YOU CHERISH WILL PERISH!

The first two verses categorically tell us about the disciples’ outward admiration of the temple. According to history, the temple was constructed of white marble, and the blocks were of a prodigious i.e. exceptional size. Josephus (a Jewish historian) says that these stones were some of them fifty feet long, twenty‐four broad, and sixteen in thickness. Jesus’ prophesied right there and then about the destruction of the temple which came to fulfillment 40 years later in AD 70 hen Titus, the Roman emperor, destroyed the city, burnt the temple, and Turnus Rufus, the general of his army, ploughed up the very foundation on which the temple stood: thus was the threatening of God fulfilled, ‘Zion shall be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become an heap’ Jeremiah 26:18.

The fact spelt out here is that this entire world will pass away someday. Everything we behold as glamorous and hold dear to our heart will eventually destroyed.

Revelations 21:1 ‘And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.’

II Peter 3:10 clearly states that this world will be destroyed by fire; “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

Everything YOU cherish will be burnt; the cars, nice cloths, your make‐up, your skimpy dresses, your tattoos, your attachments, weave‐ons, your cherished possessions, your laptop, your DVD, television, modern home theatre system, your office/place of work, your house, etc. In fact, all the things you ever love on earth will be burnt by fire.

The day of the Lord is fast approaching, are we doing all we can to ensure that we are blameless and spotless before Him?

INTIMACY WITH THE SAVIOUR RELEASES REVELATIONS

Verse 3 tells us of the action of four Jesus’ disciples (Peter, James, John & Andrew) who came privately to ask (verse 4) what the signs and the timing of the occurrences Jesus spoke of in verse 2.

Lesson to learn from the disciples’ action:

Until we privately come to Jesus (i.e. one‐on‐one with Him, without any from of noise or disturbance), certain spiritual truths or mysteries will never be made known unto us. It therefore means that if we desire (this is our own personal choice) to know Christ the more, we must seek to be involved with Him to ask Him intimate questions, bothering on any issue, He sure will answer us as He has promised in His Word, ‘Ask and ye shall receive….’ Matthew 7:7a

Verse 5 through verse 37 of Mark 13 answers the two questions the four disciples asked Jesus. Note that the answer to their two questions (contained in verse 4) spans 33 verses. What does this imply? It implies the fulfillment of another Scriptural principle in Luke 6:38 ‘Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.’ (NKJV) If we give ourselves to a committed and unbroken fellowship/relationship with God, He will give to us more than we ask for. Most times when Jesus spoke to the multitudes, He did so in parable. However, his disciples will go to meet Him to explain the mystery behind the parables. The complete/exhaustive meaning of His parables was only made known to His disciples. Mark 4:10‐12, 7:17‐23, Matthew 13:10&18.

Note: The word disciple is from the Latin word ‘discipulus’ meaning ‘learner’. If you are not a learner of the way of Christ, you can never gain access to the deep things of God. I Corinthians 2:9‐10 ‘But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.’

JESUS’ RESPONSE TO THE DISCIPLES QUESTIONS

The first statement Jesus uttered in response to the question of the four disciples was ‘Take heed lest any man deceive you.’ (Mark 13:5) Any man here implies any person/thing; be it friend, father, mother, sibling, church member/officer, pastor, general overseer, modern church(es), colleagues(s) at work, etc. You and I have personal responsibilities to ensure that we take heed (i.e. pay careful attention) so that no person by whatever authority, craftiness, or camouflage/disguise, will lure us away with sweet words, motivational words of empowerment, positive thinking, or any other means.

Colossians 2:8

King James Version:

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Weymouth’s New Testament:

Take care lest there be some one who leads you away as prisoners by means of his philosophy and idle fancies, following human traditions and the world’s crude notions instead of following Christ.

Bible In Basic English:

Take care that no one takes you away by force, through man’s wisdom and deceit, going after the beliefs of men and the theories of the world, and not after Christ:

Revised Standard Version:

See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.

World English Bible:

Be careful that you don’t let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ.

Young’s Literal Translation:

See that no one shall be carrying you away as spoil through the philosophy and vain deceit, according to the deliverance of men, according to the rudiments of the world, and not according to Christ,

Another verse that supports this verse is Hebrews 13:9 ‘Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.’

Therefore, paying careful attention to ourselves as Jesus commanded in Mark 13:5 imply the following;

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: A disciple of Jesus is one who strips himself of his ‘so‐called’ knowledge, humbles himself completely, and seeks to learn the way of His Master. A disciple is not one who looks to the world (via friends at home or abroad, television, fashion/celebrity magazines, internet, newspapers, the workplace/colleagues at work, etc) for godly standards of living, rather such is one who meticulously learns and abides by the standards of his Master, Jesus Christ. Paul was a disciple of Gamaliel, a renowned Jewish doctor of the law (Acts 5:34, 22:3).

Paul was a sound, and thoroughly informed disciple of Gamaliel. He was taught according to the perfect manner of the Jewish law. Paul therefore advises in Colossians 3:16 thus Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.’ The question we need to ask ourselves at this juncture is this; whose disciple am I, the devil or God?

One major requirement of anyone who desires to be a disciple of Christ is the intense desire, thirst, and hunger for righteousness. Righteousness encompasses, but not limited to holiness, purity, truthfulness, sincerity, and humility. Matthew 5:6 ‘Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.’

Psalm 24:3‐4 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

No wonder David in Psalm 51:10 cried unto God saying, ‘Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.’ He knew the importance of righteousness. Proverbs 14:34 ‘Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.’

Hebrews 12:14 states explicitly, ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:’ Psalm 93:5 Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.

Being careful of the association we keep: I Corinthians 15:33 boldly states ‘Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.’ The word rendered “communications” properly means, a being together; companionship; close intercourse; converse. It refers not to discourse only, but to intercourse, or companionship. (Albert Barnes’ New Testament Commentary). We need to be extremely careful of the kind of people or things we associate with. Galatians 5:9 ‘A little leaven leaventh the whole lump.’ A little adjustment in the way we serve God saying ‘it doesn’t matter’ is more than enough to destroy our entire life in the presence of God. Note: God is no respecter of persons. He expects us to be very watchful of the association we keep. Luke 11:35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.’ 1Corinthians 10:12 ‘Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.’

Are home movies, soap operas not influencing the way we talk, dress or behave? Is ‘sports’ not robbing us of the time we spend in God’s presence? Has it not corrupted our good manners of godliness? Do we still love the company of the children of God?

Are our friends not those that put on mini‐skirts, spaghetti tops, armless wears, trouser suits all in the name of modern fashion trends? Do we not also sag our trousers, barb strange hair‐cuts, use jewellery, fix attachments, make strange hair‐do, sleep with men, sleep with ladies, watch pornography, practice masturbation, lesbianism, homosexualism, practice witchcraft, sorcery, satanism, spiritism?

Have you not become empowered by satanic agents such that you now eat the flesh and drink the blood of human beings? Do you not find yourself under the water in the marine kingdom wining and dining with the queen of the coast? Do you not have sex with spiritual husbands or wives? Do you not daily either in the day or night time fly out to torment and destroy innocent souls?

Yet, you still call yourself a Christian! You still gather with the children of the Most High God to lift up ‘holy hands.’ Don’t be deceived, no one can serve two masters. Matthew 6:24 ‘No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. See also Luke 16:13.

Ephesians 5:11‐12 ‘And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.’

Philippians 3:2 ‘Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.’

Whether we like it or not, Jesus Christ is coming very soon. He’s going to judge us according to our actions. Imagine the rapture occurring when you are in the drinking bar, having sexual immoralities, singing and dancing your heart out to worldly music, backbiting or gossiping, lying to somebody, involved in any form of unrighteousness. What would be your reward? Mark 8:36 ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?’

The coming of the Lord is imminent. All the things He said would happen as signs of His coming are already happening. Remember the earthquake that hit Haiti some months ago? There was also another one that happened recently around the Mexican border with California. Beware, that day will come unannounced, suddenly, and without prior notice. It shall be a day of great turmoil, turbulence, disaster, shaking, and regret. For the children of God who have prepared themselves, it’s a day of glory, happiness, joy that has never occurred. It’s a day this corrupt body will put on incorruption, when this mortal body will put on immortality as recorded in 1Corinthians 15:52‐54 ‘In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.’

WHY DO WE HAVE TO WATCH?

The major reason why we have to watch is simply because we don’t know when the Lord will appear.

Mark 13:33 ‘Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.’

Matthew 24:42 ‘Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.’

Luke 12:40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Matthew 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Albert Barnes in his New Testament Commentary of this verse has this to say; Like the virgins, many are professedly going to meet the Bridegroom‐‐the Lord Jesus Christ. Like the coming of the bridegroom, his advent will be sudden. It will be to many at an unexpected time. Many, even professing Christians, will be engaged in the business of the world; thoughtless about eternity; not expecting his approach, and not prepared. They will only profess to know him, but in works they will deny him. So death will come. All approaches of the Son of God to judge men are sudden, and to many unexpected. So many, when they shall see him coming, at death or the judgment will begin, like the foolish virgins, to be active, and to prepare to die. But it will be too late. They that are ready will enter‐in, and heaven will be closed for ever against all others. The coming of the Saviour is certain. The precise time when he will come is not certain. As the virgins should all have watched and been ready, so should we. They who are Christians should be ever watchful; and they who are not should lose no time to be ready; for in such an hour as they think not the Son of man shall come.

WATCH! WATCH!! WATCH!!!

The Saviour whose coming is certain continues to echo the same word time and over again; watch. Watch what you do, watch what you say, watch where you go, watch the way you dress, watch the friends you keep, watch your spiritual life, watch your response to the things of this temporary world, watch what watch (i.e. view on TV, internet, newspapers, magazines, etc), watch where you eat, watch what you eat, watch how you eat, watch your entire life, watch the clothes you put on, watch that pride, watch that selfishness, watch that pompousness, brethren, let’s watch!

In the last five verses of Mark 13, Jesus repeats the world ‘watch’ four times to depict its importance and necessity.

Mark 13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

Verse 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

Verse 35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

Verse 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch

Matthew 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

1Thessalonians 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant (be watchful); because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour

CONCLUSION

The hour is nigh. The day is drawing to a close; the night time is around the corner. The coming of the Son of Man is imminent. Let’s expect our Saviour any moment from now. The Marriage Supper of the Lamb is ready. Let’s fight the good fight of faith Apostle Paul said in 2Timothy 4:7‐8, ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.’

THANKS

Posted by Seun Odunayo in February 2, 2008

Giving thanks is a habit every human being on earth must imbibe.
Giving thanks has to do with showing appreciation God who in His
infinite mercy has done all things well. You might be passing
through hell yet wonder why you must give thanks. Friend, there
are many people who are more knowledgeable than you are, passing
through bitter and harrowing experiences that surpass that which
you are facing.

There’s always a reason to give thanks. You work, career, business,
family, life, etc.. are all enjoying the mercies of your creator.
Taking into account the number of people that have died since the
inception of this year, you will surely agree with me that it is
the mercy of God you have enjoyed. Not that alone, God has been
kind to you in all ramifications. Even though evil occurrences
happened to you, yet it has not taken your life away. You
therefore have every reason to lift up your voice and give thanks.

During your sleep, God made sure you were highly protected. He
made sure that you slept and woke up peacefully each day. Even
though you were attacked in your sleep many times, He made sure
that it didn’t result in your death. God is a good God! Nothing
can be ever compared to the magnitude of blessings He has wrought
in your life these past months. They have been months of grueling
poverty, yet you are alive till today.

Your career has been safe-guided by God. He has allowed everything
that happened in order to elevate His name in your life. Know this;
you are not alone in the journey of your life. God has been and
will always be with you.

Therefore, lift up your voice today and thank God for all He has
done. GIVE THANKS.

God bless you as you give thanks to HIM.

PASSION

Posted by Seun Odunayo in February 2, 2008

Passion is an internal resolve to follow your vision even when
things don’t seem rosy. Passion is the inner push that gives you
the strength to carry on even when you feel like quitting. People
who have made meaningful contribution to life have been able to
do so because they refused to give up even in the face of
opposition, disappointment, and discouragement. They stuck to
their guns, and today are being rewarded for it.

Ask any accomplished footballer. They will tell you that their
passion for the game (and not just money alone) makes them train
hard week after week, continue playing even after serious career
threatening injuries. Passion makes the best out of every
situation. Passion doesn’t care about what people say.

As long as you are on the path of your life’s purpose, passion is
an added tool that will make you accomplish your vision. Passion
goes the extra mile. Passion says YES in the midst of NO. When
surrounded by negatives, passion only sees the positive.

Conflicts, oppositions, attacks, setbacks, or even failure never
deters passion. Passion persists to the end. If you are going to
be successful in life, then you’ve got to be bitten by the bug of
passion. It is a much-needed sting in the prosecution of your
destiny.

Friend, will you embrace passion or sit down and wallow in
self-pity? Passion is all you need to make that required
breakthrough.

God bless you!

SLEEP

Posted by Seun Odunayo in October 22, 2007

Sleep as we all know is good for the body. Sleep enables you to
rest from your daily activities, relaxes your body, refreshes your
brain, and generally refreshes and prepares you for a new day.
8-10 hour sleep is recommended as appropriate for an adult.

However, sleep is a major inhibiting factor to success. How can
this be? How can a supposedly good thing be a hindrance to another
good thing? Friend, you’ve got to wake up from your sleep. If you
are to become a truly successful and fulfilled person in life,
then you have to minimize the number of hours you sleep. Yes, you
have to minimize the number of hours you spend sleeping.

It is said that “While their mates slept, great men toiled at their
experiments and came out with inventions that change the world.”
Look, if you sleep for 8hrs/day, it means you have spent one-third
of your life sleeping on that particular day.

Let’s take a look at this simple arithmetic. We want to consider
the life of a man who slept for 8hrs/day from the age of 20 to 50.
So, we are taking into consideration, 30yrs of his life.

Recall that:
1yr = 365 days
30 yrs = 30 x 365
= 10, 950 days

Since the man slept for 8hrs in each day, it therefore means that
the total no of hours he slept in 30yrs (10, 950 days)
= 8hrs x 10, 950 days
= 87, 600 hrs

We therefore want to know the equivalent of the number of hours
he slept in days. Recall that:

24hrs = 1 day
87,600 hrs = 87,600hrs/24hrs
= 3, 650 days

It means the man slept for 3, 650 days out of the whole
10, 950 days.

Let’s do this last calculation.

Since 365 days = 1yr

Therefore,

3,650 days = 3650days/365 days
= 10 years.

From the above calculations, it shows that out of the 30yrs of the
man’s life taken into consideration, he has spent 10yrs sleeping.

Don’t be amazed! Your case is even worse than him. If your own
life is taken into consideration, only God knows how many years
you would have spent sleeping.

Friend, it is time to deny the eyes of sleep. You’ve got to remain
dogged and determined to reach the end of your goal. It however
takes the “abundant grace of God” to be able to accomplish this.
Your power can do but nothing. You need to rely on God to enable
you crucify sleep on the altar of grace. Why not say this prayer?

“Lord, I come before you. I plead that you pour your grace upon
me so that I will be able to deny myself of sleep in order to
reach the goal of my life. From today, give me the grace I need to
accomplish all you have set before me. Thank you Lord for answered
prayers. In Jesus name I have prayed (Amen).”

God bless you.

THIRST

Posted by Seun Odunayo in October 22, 2007

We all know that thirst is naturally associated with the throat.
Whenever we are thirsty, we feel a pressing need to satisfy that
thirst. We feel relieved only after we have successfully
satisfied the thirst. In reality however, do we ever feel thirsty?
In other words, what are we thirsty for? What is that ‘thing’ that
will bring relief to our thirst?

Many walk about in life without being thirsty for one thing or the
other. They are satisfied with their current positions, and
believe that there’s nothing more to know. Friend, don’t be
deceived. We are in a dynamic and ever-changing world. Things you
knew yesterday can become obsolete and irrelevant today. The way
you did things two years and won acclaim by the general populace
may today not make you achieve a higher level of success if you
still apply the same technique(s).

You’ve got to be thirsty for change. Be thirsty for improvement.
Be thirsty for new ways of doing things. Be thirsty to seek new
developments/improvements about your career. Thirst for remarked
improvement in every area of your life. Don’t remain rooted at the
same spot for many years. Seek to become better. Join the
bandwagon of positive change.

Suggest improvements in your workplace. Change they say is the

ANXIETY

In the world today, the reason behind most of our troubles is that
we are too anxious to get everything done now, now, and now. No
wonder we take 2 steps forward and 8 steps backward in the course
of our daily life decisions. Anxiety has never done, and will
never do anyone good.

Why didn’t we just grow up and become adults immediately we were
given birth to? We first had to learn to sit, then crawl, stand,
take a few faltering steps, thereafter walk properly and finally,
run. We also didn’t get to our present physical height immediately
we were born. We grew inch-by-inch, metre-by-metre till we got to
our present height. These are live examples to show us that
whatever it is we will become in life won’t be achieved in a day.

Our successes will be achieved little by little. (Poco-a-poco as
the Italians put it). We should never expect to wake up one morning
and find ourselves in that plum job we anxiously desire. We must
understand the place of time and effort in bringing about success.
Just as you don’t become a graduate the same day you get admitted into that school, but rather have to go through series of courses, which will also involve assignments, tests, examinations, and many other things, so also you don’t reap the rewards of your efforts the same day you begin to apply them positively.

You’ve got to understand this; time has a role to play in bringing
about your desired success. Please, don’t be anxious for overnight
success, it will get you nowhere.

Anxiety is never good for the soul. See you in a fortnight. Till
then, live anxious free.
